These terms govern your use of the Highveld Chronicle app and website https://highveldchronicle.co.za, operated by Highveld Chronicle. By using the app or creating an account you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

1. Using the app

You may read the app's news content for free. Some features, such as commenting, reacting and saving articles, require an account. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the app at any time.

2. Eligibility and accounts

  • You must be 18 or older, or have the consent of a parent or guardian.
  • Give accurate information and keep your password confidential. You are responsible for activity on your account.
  • Tell us straight away if you suspect unauthorised use of your account.

3. Our content and copyright

Articles, photographs, graphics, logos, editions and other material in the app belong to Highveld Chronicle, our journalists, contributors or licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws, including the Copyright Act 98 of 1978.

You may read, save and share links to our content for personal, non-commercial use. You may not copy, republish, scrape, sell, or otherwise exploit our content without our written permission. Short quotations with credit and a link back to the article are welcome where the law allows fair dealing.

4. Your comments and content

You are responsible for what you post. You keep ownership of your comments, but you give us a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to display, store, edit for clarity or legal reasons, and distribute them in the app and on our website.

You must follow our Community Guidelines. We may remove content or suspend accounts, with or without notice, that breach them or the law.

You promise that your content is yours to share, is lawful, and does not infringe anyone's rights.

5. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • post anything unlawful, defamatory, hateful, harassing, threatening, sexually explicit, or that incites violence or discrimination;
  • impersonate any person or misrepresent your affiliation;
  • post spam, advertising, scams or malware;
  • attempt to hack, disrupt or overload the app or our servers, or access accounts or data that are not yours;
  • use bots or automated tools to collect content or data from the app;
  • reverse-engineer or copy the app except as the law permits.

6. Reporting and moderation

You can report a comment from within the app using the "Report" option, and you can block a user so you no longer see their comments. We review reports and may remove content or accounts. We act on valid reports as quickly as we reasonably can; this is not guaranteed to be immediate.

7. News content and accuracy

We work to report accurately and fairly and correct errors promptly. News develops quickly, and articles reflect information available at the time of publication. Content is for general information and is not professional legal, financial, medical or other advice. Opinion pieces and comments reflect the views of their authors, not necessarily ours.

8. Links and third parties

The app may link to websites or services we do not control. We are not responsible for their content, availability or practices.

9. Disclaimers and liability

The app is provided "as is" and "as available". To the maximum extent the law allows, Highveld Chronicle is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss arising from interruptions, errors, or your reliance on content in the app. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or other laws that cannot be excluded.

10. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the app and delete your account at any time (Account > Delete my account). We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms or the law.

11. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information and forms part of these terms.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the new terms. Last updated: 7 October 2026.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and the South African courts have jurisdiction, subject to any rights you have as a consumer.
