MAPLANKENG CENTRE – Vergenoeg Mine, in partnership with Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality, handed over security torches, whistles and reflector vests to Crime and Gunfree NPO on 3 September to support community safety initiatives.
The handover, held at Maplankeng Centre in Ward 22, Lefiso, was aimed at supporting local crime-fighting structures and strengthening community safety.
Acting Executive Mayor MMC Mmasabatha Sophy Legong, who represented Executive Mayor Cllr Nomsa Mtshweni, called for collaboration between community organisations, organised labour and local leadership in fighting crime.
“By providing security torches, whistles and reflectors, Vergenoeg Mining is investing in safer, stronger and more resilient communities,” Legong said.
Representing Vergenoeg Mine, R Moyo encouraged residents to continue playing an active role in keeping their communities safe.
Crime and Gunfree NPO leader Saki Moreroa welcomed the donation and said the organisation remained committed to keeping communities safe.
“As the community of Dr JS Moroka, we intend to keep all our communities safe — safe from crime, safe from drugs and other substances that cause confusion and disrupt our communities. We are very pleased with the equipment we have received from the mine and we are going to use it wisely. This is part of creating a productive and safe society in Dr JS Moroka,” Moreroa said.
Moreroa added that the organisation works closely with Mmametlhake SAPS, led by station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Kabini, to intensify efforts to combat crime in the area.
He also appealed for financial support to provide stipends for volunteers and sustain the organisation’s operations.
“We need a stipend so that Crime and Gunfree can pay stipends to these young people who are volunteering day and night to keep our communities safe,” Moreroa said.
The event was attended by Crime and Gunfree NPO chairperson Mary Tlala, NPO members, trade union representatives from AMCU and NUM, traditional leaders and other stakeholders.
