KWAGGAFONTEIN – Thembisile Hani Local Municipality has strengthened its service delivery capacity by procuring its own fleet of trucks, officially handed over on Tuesday, 6 October.
The handover took place during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the municipality’s head offices in Kwaggafontein.
Speaking at the ceremony, MMC for Technical Services Cllr Eunice Malekane said the trucks would enable the municipality to reach areas that had previously been difficult to access.
She identified Jiyane Farm, next to Palisa Coal Mine, Msholozi Village in KwaMhlanga, Khayelisha, Vaalbank, Ngengwenyameni, Bhundu Inn and Mashipe among the areas where poor road conditions and difficult terrain have hampered access.
Malekane said the fleet would help the municipality deliver essential services to these remote communities and improve its response to their needs.
She also reassured subcontractors currently providing services to the municipality, amid concerns that the acquisition could result in job losses.
Malekane said the municipality was adding capacity rather than replacing existing service providers.
“The purpose of this fleet is to add capacity, not to replace anyone. Our subcontractors are still part of us and will continue to work with the municipality,” Malekane said.
The vehicles are expected to strengthen the delivery of essential services across all wards and improve response times to service delivery complaints.
The municipality said the fleet would help address logistical challenges that have previously affected its ability to reach remote communities.
