DELMAS – Sihappy S'ngaphezulu have etched their name into local football history after winning the 2025/26 LFA League title in their inaugural season, completing a remarkable campaign under the guidance of head coach Bahlezi Mahlangu.
The club capped off an unforgettable season by also lifting the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation (DCSR) Tournament, ending the campaign with two trophies and setting their sights on competing in the SAB League.
Reflecting on the achievement, Mahlangu described the league title as the greatest milestone in the club's short history.
“This one is special. After everything we went through as a team, becoming champions in our inaugural season has to be our greatest achievement.”
Mahlangu attributed the club's success to the unity, commitment and collective effort shown by everyone involved.
“Like every team, we had our own trials and tribulations, but we stood firm together. From the management to the coaching staff and the players, everybody played their part. Everyone knew what was expected of them.”
According to Mahlangu, the defining moment of the season came after Sihappy S'ngaphezulu suffered a defeat to Mayambela FC, reducing their lead at the top of the table from five points to just two.
“The players started to panic after that loss, but I told them this was the time to become even more focused and resilient. From then on, they showed their true character. Everyone was willing to fight for the badge until the final game of the season.”
Guiding a youthful squad to the title required tactical discipline, patience and adaptability, he said.
“With such a young team, as a coach you have to manage the game from the bench and ensure we remain tactically disciplined. The players responded exceptionally well, learned from their mistakes and adapted to every game plan we introduced.”
While praising the entire squad for their contribution, Mahlangu singled out captain Sphamandla for his outstanding leadership and dedication.
“Every player stood out for me, but our captain Sphamandla deserves special recognition. He led the team while balancing his matric studies with football. That alone showed how determined the boys were to win the league.”
As the title race intensified, the technical team introduced different tactical approaches each week, which the players embraced.
“Towards the end of the season we introduced different game plans every week during training, and the players adapted positively to each one.”
The loss of several key players during the campaign tested the squad's depth, forcing the club to promote youngsters from its development structures.
“Losing key players was a major setback, but it gave us the opportunity to promote players from our development structures. They stepped up and delivered when we needed them most.”
Mahlangu also paid tribute to the club's management, technical staff and loyal supporters, saying their unwavering support played a significant role in the team's success.
“Their support meant everything. From preparing the field to organising match-day logistics, everyone played their role. We repaid their loyalty by winning the league. Our supporters stood by us through the highs and lows, and we will always be grateful.”
Having secured both the league title and the DCSR Tournament, Mahlangu believes the club is ready for the next challenge in the SAB League.
“We've won two trophies this season the league title and the DCSR Tournament. We want to take that championship mentality into the SAB League. We're going there to compete, not just to make up the numbers.
Despite the successful campaign, Mahlangu said there is still room for improvement and hinted that the club will strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.
“There's always room for improvement. We need to strengthen certain areas, so the cheque book will be busy before pre-season starts.”
He concluded by encouraging young footballers to remain disciplined and committed to both their education and the sport.
“Keep working hard, stay disciplined and learn how to balance school and football. Your opportunity will come, just as it did for the players who are now competing at this level.”
After lifting two trophies in their first ever season, Sihappy S'ngaphezulu have established themselves as one of the region's most promising football clubs. With confidence high and momentum on their side, the newly crowned champions will now turn their attention to the SAB League, determined to build on an extraordinary debut campaign.
