MPUMALANGA – The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has urged motorists to exercise extra caution this weekend as traffic volumes are expected to increase ahead of the reopening of schools and the Premier's Cup football tournament in KaNyamazane.
In a media statement issued on 17 July 2026, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie appealed to all road users to obey traffic laws, remain vigilant and adjust their driving according to prevailing road conditions.
Macie said the reopening of schools next week, coupled with the movement of football supporters travelling to the Premier's Cup, is expected to place additional pressure on the province's road network.
He urged public transport operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and not overloaded, emphasising that the safety of passengers and other road users must remain a priority.
“Let us all prioritise safety this weekend and beyond. Let us all play our part to preserve lives by travelling safely. Do not drive when you are tired. Rather take a break every two hours or every 200 km of driving,” said Macie.
The MEC also called on traffic law enforcement officers to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations and to act decisively against motorists who disregard the rules of the road.
Law enforcement officers are expected to maintain a visible presence on major routes that have historically recorded high traffic volumes and road fatalities, including the N2, N3, N4, N11, N12, N17, R23, R36, R38 and R573.
Macie reiterated his call for harsher penalties for reckless driving, saying stricter enforcement would help reduce road crashes and save lives.
“We continue to advocate for harsher sentences for reckless driving behaviour. Punishing offenders will prevent needless loss of life and make our roads safer,” he said.
The department also warned motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving in misty conditions, particularly during the early morning and at night. Roads commonly affected by poor visibility include the N12 through eMalahleni, Delmas and Ogies, the N4 between Belfast and Machadodorp, the N11 around Ermelo and Volksrust, as well as the R35, R36, R38 and R568.
The department encouraged all road users to remain patient, avoid speeding, wear seatbelts, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy to help make weekend travel safer for everyone.
