MIDDELBURG — The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality Cultural Services Department launched the National Library
Week on 17 March 2026 at Adelaide Tambo Community Hall, encouraging young people to access information, develop
skills, and explore economic opportunities.
The programme runs from 16 to 22 March 2026 under the theme “Reclaiming Knowledge, Empowering Futures.”
Ward 24 Councillor, Monty Phetla, welcomed the youth and local small businesses who attended, encouraging them to take
full advantage of the initiative. “Let’s make this Library Week a success and memorable by embracing the knowledge shared
today,” he said.
Assistant Director for Cultural Services, Shirley Xulu, outlined the purpose of the programme, calling on young people to
unlock their potential. “This platform is about allowing young people to unleash their creativity, network, and share
information that can change their lives,” she said, adding that such initiatives are aimed at helping reduce unemployment in
the municipality.
MMC for Arts, Culture, Sports, Recreation and Environmental Health, Bathobile Shabangu, highlighted the importance of
youth participation in economic development. “Remember, entrepreneurship is not only about starting a business, but about
creating jobs for young entrepreneurs and their families,” she said.
She further encouraged attendees to visit the Local Economic Development (LED) Office to access business opportunities
and government-supported training programmes.
Some of the young attendees welcomed the initiative and shared their experiences. “This programme opened my eyes to
opportunities I didn’t know existed. I feel motivated to start something of my own,” said Thabiso Nkosi.
Lerato Mthembu said the event was both informative and inspiring. “I’ve learned the importance of using the library not just
for studying, but also for gaining knowledge about business and personal growth,” she said.
