Doornkop — Learners at Mkhulu Secondary School in Doornkop received soccer and netball kits from Steve Tshwete Executive Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela during a donation drive held on 13 February 2026.

The donation included a full soccer kit and a full netball kit to support the school’s sporting programmes. Mayor Masilela also commanded the school’s strong academic performance, citing its 84% matric pass rate for the 2025 academic year.

“I am happy with the academic performance of this school. I would like to appeal to the learners to focus on your studies. We would like to see future leaders coming from this school,” he said.

He further encouraged learners to uphold discipline and unity both on and off the field. “Please stay away from bullying. Those who participate in sports, do your best so that you can participate at the highest level one day,” Masilela added.

The Municipality said the initiative forms part of its service delivery programme under the slogan “Sphush’iService Delivery,” which supports community upliftment projects.

Sports participation plays a role in learner development, including promoting physical health, mental well-being and academic performance. It also teaches essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline and resilience, while building confidence and reducing stress.
