“Albertina Sisulu paved a way for me to be Premier” – Refilwe Mtshweni
“That march and the central coordinating role played by uMama Albertina Sisulu will forever be heralded in the annals of our history as momentous display of the political strength, solidarity and fortitude of women. It served and continues to serve as the proverbial North Star highlighting the virtues of female leadership. I stand before you today, as the first female Premier of the Mpumalanga Province as a testament of the road uMama Albertina Sisulu paved for the rest of us”. These the introductory remarks aired by the Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni as she addressed the provincial woman’s day celebrations at the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in Kwaggafontein.
Sticking with the theme on gender and with focus on women the Premier continued on the subject of gender parity and that women need to also be afforded the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
As the day proceeded in his message of support the Mpumalanga MEC of Agriculture Mr. Vusi Shongwe said women should be supported and that as man they have recognized the status of women and they should be provided with 50% either at work or home, since this is the government policy. “The same government which is African National Congress that is coordinated by Honourable Ms. RM Mtshweni. “It is the same government that builds RDP houses for the needy, hence people should not stop in voting with regard to supporting ANC, if there are things which the ANC didn’t do well or fails to deliver to the people, people should voice out, so that they can correct their mistakes” Vusi Shongwe remarked in closing.
One of the highlights of the event was the moment when text from the biography of the late Mama Albertina Sisulu that was recited by Nkosi Sikhosani a high school learner.
